There should also be an established process in place to help employees such as Mary to deal with issues in their personal life so as to ease the burden and stress that personal problems bring to the workplace. For example, allowing Mary to have a flexible work schedule while caring for her two teenage daughters could take some of the stress off her and enable her to improve her job performance and productivity. In addition to that, involving Mary in the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) would enable her to get the much needed assistance and support to resolve her personal problems and perform better at work. The manager and the employee should identify common goals or objectives that align with departmental goals and organizational strategy, and the skills necessary to accomplish them during the performance period. Employees like Mary Corey should be encouraged to participate in the design of their yearly objectives so that they have full accountability for their performance and deliverables. The steps to be taken are as follows:- 1. The line manager should meet with the employee to discuss departmental goals for the year. 2. The employee should create her own objectives and tie them to job responsibilities and department goals. 3. Employee should meet and collaborate with the manager to review objectives for adjustment, agreement and final approval. 4. Employee now has agreement on key objectives that need to be accomplished for the year.
