obsessed with a man’s approval of her. A scene that stood out to me is towards the ending of the film where Shug comes back with a husband and introduces him to Mister and Celie. As Celie and Shug are in kitchen, we get a shot of Mister and Shug’s husband talking about how they both had her their own way. As they say this, we see Shug over hearing their conversation in the kitchen smiling away at what they are saying, indicating that she loves that these two men had her their way as if she was a pet. I feel that such a scene contradicts to what her character is supposed to be. Another character whose spotlight is completely ruined is Sofia who is married to Harpo. Although, in the film we do see Sofia as someone who does not let no man or women take advantage of her by using her words or hands to show for. There are scenes in the film that 4

take it away from her such as when Harpo is asking his father on how to control Sofia his father replies to hit her and so does Celie. Yet, we aren’t shown the scene where Harpo tries taking this advice and in a later scene, we see Harpo telling his father that he has a black eye because a donkey hit him. This occurs again when Sofia is in town with her children and a white woman comes up to her saying how cute her children are to which she proceeds telling Sofia if she can be her maid. Sofia offended by the offer tells the woman “Hell no” which her husband who so happens to be the mayor gets angry with Sofia and slaps her. The camera then shows Sofia getting angry and clutching her fist and as soon as she’s going to hit back the camera pans out and the shot is covered by a car passing by. So, in the two scenes that involve Sophie protecting herself against a man we don’t get to see it. Yet, in an earlier scene when Sofia visits Harpo’s new joint, now separated from him and with a different woman, we see Harpo’s new girl insulting Sofia to which we get to see Sofia slap her to the point she falls into the lake. Now why is it when Sofia is defending herself against a man, we don’t get to see it but when she defends herself against a woman, we get to see it. Another powerful scene that gets interrupted is when Celie has two opportunities to get away from Mister and finally be free. These two scenes involve Celie preparing to shave mister, one scene is when she was young, and the second scene is when she is older. The first scene as she is contemplating to cut Misters neck, she gets interrupted by the mailman and the second scene she is interrupted by Shug who just made it in time to hold Celie back. Even at the end of the film when Celie is finally free and reunited with her sister and children the scene is interrupted with Mister on looking their reunion with a somewhat smile on his face to which the camera pans to Shug who notices him and smiles. At the last shot as we see Nettie and Celie clapping their hands playing a game as they did when they were younger, we see Mister walk pass by them in the background. So, from a novel that 5

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
