But aside from the Doctrina he was also known for his work the “Customs of the Tagalogs”, which tackled the government of the Tagalogs, their administration of justice, slavery, inheritance, social system, and marriages. The purpose or objective of most of his works was actually for the Christianization of the natives of the Philippines, to promote the understanding of both the Spanish language among
the natives, and the local languages among the missionaries, and as well as to help the Philippines with the injustices it experienced that time. There is a big reason why Juan de Plasencia wrote the “Customs of the Tagalogs”. It was actually the request of D. Trinidad Pardo de Tavera, why he wrote the memoir. Because that time, the Philippines experienced injustices and Tavera, as the Magistrate back then, for him to rule with justice, he needs to know first the usages and customs of the country which he was commissioned to rule. And it was then that, knowing the remarkable abilities of Juan de Plasencia, Tavera wrote to him, asking that he would inform him in regard to the social and political organization of the Tagalogs.
