“The primary ways to prevent hospital acquired C. diff infections are by thorough caregiver handwashing between patients, limiting antibiotic use, isolating patients with known C. diff infection, effective cleaning of patient rooms using a spore killing cleaner, and preventing cross-contamination by appropriately cleaning equipment between patients and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)” (Johnson, 2018). Addressing the issue of C. diff infections within the hospital will include discussing limiting the use of antibiotics for suspected infections. The physicians at the hospital currently prescribe and treat suspected infections without first waiting for results of urinary workups. There were eight C. diff infections reported from 2016-2017. This is a large number of patients and must be reduced. Measures to do so should be implemented and adhered to. Proposal Initiative The initiative that will be proposed in this final project is developing a policy and procedure for all interdisciplinary teams to follow in order to reduce the rate of C. diff infections within The Westerly Hospital. This policy will indicate that all staff members interacting with the patient will use proper hand hygiene. This means that the staff will wash their hands with soap and water before and after interacting with the patient. Hand sanitizer is not an effective

MILESTONE 1 5 means to kill C. diff. It is imperative that staff leaving a room of a patient that has C. diff wash their hands. These patients must also be isolated in a private room with a clear indication that there is an infection present. Proper PPE must also be located at the door in a noticeable location for staff to obtain. In order to prevent the spread of infection, a bleach solution must be used to clean all areas of the patient room once the patient leaves. C. diff is a spore that has the ability to survive on surfaces for long periods of time. It is also important that staff members leave essential equipment such as a vital machine, in the patient’s room until they leave. This reduces the risk of spreading infection to other patients. All surfaces of equipment must be cleaned thoroughly with bleach once it leaves the room. Lastly, physicians must adhere to reducing the use of antibiotics. They should only be prescribed when indicated by positive clinical laboratory results. Broad spectrum antibiotics should be changed as soon as the results of a sensitivity come back. They must also be prescribed for the minimum number of days necessary to treat the infection.
