103 Cooperation with the local employment office and with industry in the vocational guidance programme is obviously a great reward to the community as well as to the student. Follow-up studies can provide data for the community on the utilization of the manpower resources e.g. progress of students in their training/jobs. The development of a positive attitude toward the community by the student and the realistic enhancement of opportunity locally taking available jobs and training is a valuable community outcome. Placement of youths in employment/training leads to reduction of delinquency and crime can benefit the community economically as well as psychologically. Note the guidance and counselling teacher should do evaluation to find out how the programme has affected family life and life in the community i.e. evaluation should include an examination of other outcomes besides those benefit the students. 8.7 SURVEY OF SERVICES AND FACILITIES It is vital that a guidance programme be based upon objectives that can be achieved within the framework of the current staff of the school and the opportunity that staff has in terms of time, curricular offering, facilities, budgetary matters, and personal resources to function at a level consonant with expressed objectives. Thus the application of a checklist for analyzing existing guidance services is advisable. This assessment should be accomplished through an appropriate guidance committee and should include an outside consultant. Generally survey instruments require the evaluators to respond to a number of categories, which comprise the guidance programme. These responses are usually either “Yes” or “No” or points on a continuum which require the rater to determine the attitude, accessibility, extensiveness, or adequacy of the service or resource (Roeber, Smith & Erickson, 1955).
