Many assessment models focus on the alleged pathologies of clients and may
overlook valuable resources including both internal and external client assets.
A contextual-constructional approach, in contrast, attends to client
characteristics and circumstances including alternative behaviors that may be
able to replace less desired behaviors, client strengths, environmental
resources such as sources of social support, and policies and related legislation
that influence resources available such as health care and financial aid.
It focuses on strengths and resources that can help in the achievement of
client aims, as well as on personal and environmental obstacles. The aim is to
discover and create positive “repertoires” that can be used to attain hoped-for
outcomes, rather than merely eliminating negative repertoires.Learning how to
make a sound, evidence-based assessment decisions takes time and practice.
But it is something that an ethically competent professional can, and should,
learn to do.

The social worker’s skill and willingness to engage in evidence-based practice
thus constitutes the micro context in which clinical decision-making takes
place.

Hello class,
The Micro approach of counseling should be utilized in the case of Pedro
and is the best approach for assessment and establishing a good client rapport.
Micro approach will allow for one on one interacting with the social worker and
client (socialworklicensemap.com, 2017). Focus on building a good rapport
with the client is easier and permits for specific issues to be addressed and
resolution to modified to deal with the individual’s specific issues. During
assessment of Pedro determining what his primary needs for assistance will
also help to create a good plan for aide. Gathering information about not just
this present family dynamics but also his previous marriage and drug abuse

history can give insight on his emotional and mental stability and needs
(socialworklicensemap.com, 2017). With the traumas, he had experienced
acknowledging those things would be important in him creating a positive self-
image.
Pedro has had many emotional traumas that were a result of his drug
abuse issues; these affect his self-image, ability to trust others and freely
express any type of dependency on others. Being able to properly assess the
perspective of the client provides, great insight into how to implement
therapeutic techniques that will be beneficial to the client in their everyday life
(Ruben, 2015). Pedro’s requires a large amount of empathy and patience, to
make a connection between social worker and client. Pedro’s reluctance to show
or express any vulnerability or “need” for help is a great indicator of his actual
need for understanding and acceptance, which is what helps to build trust.
