I feel it is important for a therapist to give a patient advice rather than give them lectures because the patient is there to talk about their problems and what has been on their mind. They are not there to be scolded by someone who should be helping them. A therapist should set boundaries and only talk about what their patient is comfortable with. The therapist should not force the patient to talk about something they do not want to talk about. The last characteristic a therapist should have is good listening skills. I feel that this is the most important feature for a therapist to have because they should be able to listen well and respond with empathy towards the patient. In the film, Dr. Berger shows all these characteristics when talking with Conrad. Carl Rogers’ three components of psychotherapy are genuineness; meaning that the therapist relates to the patient in an open way, empathic understanding; meaning the therapist understands the client’s point of view, and then the last component is unconditional positive regard which means the therapist fully accepts the client with complete understanding.
