subject is alive and well than it means the subject is happy and content. has reason – this one called Calf Bearer. The statue known as Calf Bearer is one of the first known artifacts which employ the Archaic smile ii . This statue is made of a different material than the image of Apollo, with the Calf Bearer constructed out of marble instead of terracotta. I found the image of Apollo and the image of the sacrifice of the calf to be similar as they both pay patronage to a God or Goddess. The statue of Apollo was likely to be placed on or near a temple for the God, and the image of the man sacrificing the young animal was in honor of the Goddess Athena. Both the statue of Apollo and the statue of the pious Calf Bearer include the Archaic smile. While it was unlikely the individuals the artists had in mind while sculpting these works was smiling wide the entire time, the Greeks recognized how frequently human facial expressions changed. I believe they used this knowledge to include and develop the idea for the Archaic smile to show the subjects were alive.
