A part of the cable was immersed in an ammonium thiocyanate solution at 20 °C (70 °F). As the stress corrosion cracking process began seven weeks after the beginning of immersion, genuine acoustic emission signals were recorded from stress corrosion crack propagation at the corrosion cell. Rupture occurred after 63 days of immersion. Hydrogen Embrittlement of Line Pipe Steel A study was conducted to prove that hydrogen embrittlement can be detected by acoustic emission testing. Promising results have been obtained with hydrogen induced cleavage. A lot of noise coming from hydrogen evolution has to be collected at a high rate of data acquisition. After pattern recognition analysis, 95 percent of signals were rejected and the remaining hits were compatible with high velocity cleavage process. Furthermore, acoustic emission location was in good agreement with an ultrasonic C-scan map. Extensive work has also been done on sulfite stress cracking and stress oriented hydrogen induced cleavage. 34 Figure 30 shows the experimental setup. Acoustic emission transducers are fixed inside a hole fabricated in the steel test object. 35 Corrosion within Concrete Research was conducted using acoustic emission testing to study the corrosion of reinforcement bars in concrete. After a small study on specific samples to evaluate the effect of potentiokinetic polarization, it was shown that acoustic emission is detected as the polarization curve reaches the anode. As the current increases, the different population of higher energy reveals microcracking. Technology for corrosion detection has been extensively developed. 36 It is based on acoustic emission measurements yet takes into account the environmental conditions for reinforced concrete. High Temperature Corrosion: Acoustic Emission Testing and Thermogravimetry To improve the knowledge of the high temperature behavior of metallic materials, the coupling in situ of several physical analysis methods were considered. For this purpose, a thermogravimetric balance was instrumented with an acoustic emission device. The acoustic emission device continuously measures the mass variation of the corrosion sample and the transient acoustic emission under the experimental conditions of temperature and gas phase compositions representative of industrial environments.
