This manual helps define the criteria of what Autism is. Diagnosis of children with ASD is rapidly advancing in order for them to achieve independent lives. Their potential scientific based educational interventions and treatment have to be in place at schools and in homes. Outcomes and data show that ABA programs reported increasing numbers of children on the autism spectrum are being successful in some degree of inclusive education after receiving early intensive intervention programming (Harris & Handleman, 2005). ABA focuses on using a variety of sources to improve communication while making it fun at the same time. Interventions in ABA are used based on the child’s motivators. These could be edibles, electronics, games, puzzles, or even music. ABA therapy is used to expand communication while using Pictures Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Behavioral treatment includes an 5

ABA THERAPY AND CHILDREN WITH AUTISM emphasis on child motivation. It uses fun activities in their natural environment to teach new skills. Behavioral treatment continually focuses on establishing a relationship between children and therapist based on success and social interactions (Lovaas and Wright, 2006). Verbal Behavior in children with Autism In Frost and Bondy’s article, they referred to communication as also being non-verbal at times. This is done by displaying gestures and pointing at things. Children with ASD choose to communicate with gestures at times as well as verbal communication. The verbal behavior may repeat itself depending on how the listener reinforces or does not reinforce a response. This article is different from the others because it focuses only on behavior and ignores the other domains of ASD. Additionally, this article is related to the others because it focuses on verbal and non-verbal communication. It emphasizes on external factors such as environment and stimuli. Some of these stimuli are present in my other articles but are called reinforcers or motivators. Reinforcing a behavior that is desired is most likely to repeat itself if reinforcement happens (Frost & Bondy, 2009). Discrete Trial Training The success of ABA therapy is based on therapy applied to children with ASD that experience delays, deficits on social skills, and verbal or non-verbal communication. This article focuses on communication by using pictures or icons while teaching new items to expand communication. ABA can be used to teach anything. However, this article focuses more in communication and responses. ABA is the most used intervention for autistic children and is based on evidence and research. Discovered in 1987 by Dr. Lovaas, ABA has proven to be effective as the most used treatment option on theories of learning and operant conditioning 6

ABA THERAPY AND CHILDREN WITH AUTISM (Lovaas 1987). This article is similar to my study and very much relevant because it focuses on verbal and non-verbal communication. Applied Behavioral Analysis and education in Children with Autism Students of ASD should start as early as possible with diagnosis beginning as early as age 2. Also, interventions, treatments and education should remain available as the child matures.
