caused it, but ultimately, the mystery turned out to be a simple matter of odds. Infection doesn’t care about who I am, it just is. I believe that an approach which grounded itself in statistics was essential in coping with that part of my life, and continues to be useful dealing with the day-to- day experience. Statistical understanding doesn’t just improve my daily life, though. It also gives me a lens with which to view current events and scientific research. When a new study comes out with new information about exercise, nutrition, or sleep, I look through it to determine whether I can trust the results. Having statistical literacy helps me incorporate new information effectively. Similarly, as I hear about constantly changing situations in the news, I use statistics to think about how crime rates or new policies might affect my life. Sometimes, they have no bearing on me, and then I know that. Other times, I need to change something to adapt to new risks. This statistical approach applies beyond my personal life. It is just as important to my professional life. In my previous job, I analyzed productivity data to find patterns in my department’s workload. Running head: THIS I BELIEVE 3 would find it. While there, I gained a deeper appreciation for how statistics can help me find solutions to problems. I gathered data on firm spending on access to court databases to uncover whether it was cost-effective or not. My opinion mattered, but more important was grounding it in verifiable facts. Without a grounding in statistical analysis, I could never have reported flaws in our approach. Analyzing data doesn’t just help me when it comes to everyday events. It also lets me determine the importance of new insights from the news and from scientific research. By using statistics, I can understand the world around me more clearly, and I can help an employer do the same. Statistics undergirds my understanding of the world, and I believe that it helps me cope with the challenges of being a modern person.
