Johnny and Ponyboy walk through a park late at night, a gang of drunken Socs jump them and start drowning Ponyboy in the park fountain. Johnny, seeing his friend in grave danger, flicks his switchblade open and kills the Soc who was drowning Ponyboy. Johnny tells Ponyboy, “I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade... they were going to beat me up…”(57). The phrase “I had to” implies that Johnny did something that he did not want to do, considering the potential consequences that might result. This means that Johnny, who is normally scared stiff in the presence of Socs, gets out of his comfort zone to save his friend’s life, while risking getting himself in trouble by killing someone. Even though Johnny is very heroic by stabbing the Soc, he and Ponyboy demonstrate an even bigger act of heroism at a church in Windrixville.
