The equation must represent known facts. All reactants and/or products MUST be recognized. The equation must contain the correct formulas for the reactants and products. The law of conservation of mass must be satisfied. Coefficients must be used. Word and Formula Equations: Word equation – an equations in which the reactants nd products in a chemical are represented by words. Formula equation – represents the reactants and products of a chemical reaction by their symbols or formulas. Use coefficients to balance an equation Additional Symbols Used in Chemical Equations: There’s a table in the book. Catalyst – a substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction but can be recovered unchanged. Reversible reaction – a chemical reaction in which the products re-form the original reactants. Represented by writing two arrows pointing in opposite directions. Significance of a Chemical Equation: The coefficients of a chemical reaction indicate relative, not absolute, amounts of reactants and products.
