The development of more inclusive work on women

This preview shows page 4 - 5 out of 5 pages.

The development of more inclusive work on women spawned ‘Men’s Studies’. Men’s studies challenges many of the patriarchal biases in traditional studies. Men’s studies is feminist. It actually arose from the women’s movement when men realized how sex and gender shaped their lives. It takes an active stance and challenges existing sexist norms. Men’s studies isn’t just about men, it sees men as gendered beings 9. Be able to discuss the relationship between second-wave feminism and the civil rights movement. (Ch. 11) It was the awareness of African American women that generated an understanding within feminism that gender inequality is intricately linked to race and class inequality. The civil rights movement and the 1965 civil rights act was an accomplishment for women- not just women of colour because the act was passed prohibiting all discrimination based not only on race but sex as well.

10.Be able to discuss the limitations of liberal feminism. (Ch. 12) Although liberals support the values of individual freedom, this means they tend not to see the social structural bases of some forms of inequality. An example would be LGBTQ people seen as making a “lifestyle choice” according to liberalism, but ignoring how heterosexism is normalized in our institutions, so the LGBTQ issues are much more than a lifestyle choice. The goal of liberal feminism is equality, but in saying that women should be equal to men, liberal feminism does not specify which men women want to be equal to. Thus, it glosses over the class and race structure of societal relations. - “In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. There is no other way, and in order to treat some persons equally, we must treat them differently” ( Blackmun 1978 ). 11. Be able to discuss the role of capitalism in women’s oppression. (Ch. 13) Marx and Engels’s analysis of how capitalism worked emphasizes the ownership of systems of production and the exploitation of wage labor. Their work includes women only insofar as they are wage laborers, although socialist feminists added women’s unpaid labor in the home to classical Marxist theory, thus analyzing women’s role in production (as well as in reproductive labor) to socialist feminist theory. 12.Explain how World War I turned the tide in the campaign for women’s suffrage according to the producers of Women on the March (film). Women joined the army to contribute to their country during WW1, women who were previously jailed for protesting were set free. Many women were killed in action and most importantly, women stepped into the jobs men left behind to fight. These women proved they had the courage, strength and ability to do men’s work. 13.Be able to discuss the three issues that were not sufficiently addressed by the 1967 Royal Commission on the Status of Women or legislators during the second-wave period according to the producer of Status Quo? The Unfinished Business of feminism in Canada (film) Violence against women, poverty that affects women, especially single mothers and children & LGBT women
