The reason for the name is that the corrections officials do not want to recognize the connotations that come with the use of the word “gang”. STG’s are a threat to both correctional officers as well as other inmates. (Campbell, 2013) . They are structured gangs that usually represent their own race. Examples of these structured gangs are the lesser known Texas Mafia and the much more organized, dangerous and well-known Aryan Brotherhood a white supremacist gang, and Netas, a latino based gang. Each gang is basically an organized criminal network within the correctional facility that share the same characteristics and ultimately have the same goals and interests. It does not matter what group they are affiliated with, each gang in one way or another pose a threat to the welfare and safety of the officers. Whichever group they belong to, one thing is common for correctional officials.
