Opportunity to integrate and apply professional knowledge and skills acquired in courses and practica o Acquire new competencies consistent with training program goals o Follows 2 years of full-time graduate-level academics, including practicum and field experiences o Often the final requirement for terminal degree o “Halfway House” that provides opportunity for a smooth transition btw academic environment and full- time job of SP o Three parties are generally involved in practica and internship: The student, the university supervisor, and the site supervisor. o Site supervisor has much more responsibility for day-to-day supervision of intern, advises univ supervisor of intern’s performance and recommends approval or denial of credentialing o Univ supervisors observe from more distant perspective o Interns often report that they learned more from internships that all other experiences combined o Internship Requirements – NASP Standards Collaboration between training program and field site that assures completion of activities consistent with goals of training program Written plan specifies responsibilities of training program and internship site in providing supervision, support, formative/summative performance-based eval Completed on full-time basis over one year or part-time basis over two consecutive years At least 600 hrs completed in school setting Average of at least two hours of field-based supervision per full-time week from credentialed SP Internship placement agency provides appropriate support: Written agreement specifying time period of appointment and terms of compensation Schedule of appts, expense reimbursement, safe and secure work environment, adequate office space Continuing professional development opportunities Release-time for internship supervision Commitment to internship as a diversified training experience Other Internship Considerations – Less formal aspects of internship year o Deciding on an internship site Focus on geographical, social, and financial factors Once locations are determined, next step is to find out whether internship placement is possible Illinois School Psychologist Assoc. – career fair More freedom of mobility among prospective interns Inter-University Council (Ohio) – allotted internships by SDE and then distributed accordingly based on needs Better regionalization of interns along with continued proximity to training programs o Applying for an internship Submit resume (Curriculum vitae), academic transcripts, letter of rec, other materials Placement files of placement papers sent out by university placement office at students’ request Students also advised, if not required, to ask at least one of SP faculty members to be a reference Preparing for Interview o General questions about community and school district show interest in position o Lack of questions show lack of interest
