1900s most people held the view that sexuality wasfixed and binarybut AlfredKinsey(1940s) ended this long period of “ Victorian prudery”. He showed that sexual orien-tation lies on a continuum. hetero  homohe noted that many people often do not act on their sexual desires for fear of attractingcensure or stigma. The homosexual population:the tolerance is a lot more widespread. However there’s still a lot ofstigma and hate depending on which area of the world you are placed.According to Stats Can: 1.1 % of Canadians age 18-59 report being homosexual and 0.9% considerthemselves bisexual. This survey defined homosexuality in terns of identity rather than sexual behavior , so the number maybe higher if you include behavior, because more people engage in this sexual behavior than identify.- it is likely that homosexuals concentrate in large numbers in some communities compared to other iecities vs rural.- homosexuals pop may reach as high as 10% in pops where they are most concentrated, but the na-tional pop usually stays between 1-2%- male homosexuals are invariably found to be more numerous than female homosexuals (reason un-known)-the debate continues to flourish about how to properly define and measure homosexualitythere’s a huge issue with defining homosexuality; there are those that(1) identify(2) had a least one same sex partner during a lifetime(3) those that are simply attracted but do not actsexual identity:how a person self identities whether as straight gay lesbian asexual or otherwisecoming out: is a huge transition for those in the LGBT community. Its important because:until a person comes out they have difficulty entering the LGBT community. This is a hugetransition usually involving new friends and activities
peoples identities are linked to the social roles they play. They cannot fully enter or getsupport until they entirely embrace their new identitydisclosure is important in the organizations where LGBT individuals work. This is where youspend most of your adult time so its important that you are yourselves there.Coming out does not occur in a vacuum it effects the people around you as wellAttitudes and laws :even if homosexuality has not been widely accept over the course of history, it has been highly knownabout.Eg Oscar Wildle 1854-1900 everyone know he was a homosexual, and this was long before anyonethought they should charge or imprison him. It was only once someone tries to discredit him that theyused his sexuality against him and this is when homosexual became a public issueContrast this to ancient Greece where people considered sex relations between 2 men to be a normalpart of life.As long as a man was old enough to vote he was old enough to have sex with anyone hepleased even young boys. The only rule was that they had to assume the “Top” position. So homosex-ual was accepted and even had its own etiquette.
