Hormonal Control of F Reproductive Cycle Cycle begins with secretion of gonadotropins by the anterior pituitary (FSH & LH) FSH stimulates growth of ovarian follicles Follicles- cells surrounding the ovum Follicle matures & secretes estradiol Causes growth of lining of uterus In preparation for implantation upon ovum fertilization Mid-cycle feedback to hypothalamus triggers anterior pituitary to release LH LH surge

The Ovary during Menstrual Cycle Under control of LH & FSH , a follicle develops and is released at ovulation; LH & FSH are peptides that bind to cell-suface receptors on granulosa and theca cells and activate steroidogenic enzymes. Follicular Phase : FSH induces follicular to grow and estrogen is produced by granulosa cells of the follicle; as follicle grows more E is released. Periovulatory Period : LH surge causes Graffian Follicle to rupture releasing ova.; LH surge produced by E acting to stimulate HPG ( positive feedback ) Luteal Phase : Progesterone is produced by Corpus luteum. P E FSH Graffian Follicle LH Surge

Hormonal Control of F Reproductive Cycle LH surge Causes ovulation Follicle ruptures releasing the ovum Becomes corpus luteum Produces estradiol (E) & progesterone (P) Maintain lining of uterus Inhibits ovaries from producing another follicle Ovum enters fallopian tubes & progresses towards uterus If fertilized by sperm begins to divide & will attach to the uterine wall If not fertilized corpus luteum stops producing E & P and the lining of the uterus sloughs off Menstruation

Birth Control Pills Birth control pills are usually a mixture of E & P with a set of low or no hormone pills for one week to allow for menstruation The time that the E & P are high are mimicking the effects of pregnancy & the women does not ovulate The lack of ovulation prevents the women from becoming pregnant If the pill is not taken regularly the feedback to the hypothalamus can be disrupted triggering the LH surge & ovulation

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
