paintings are drawings how the child depends on words, images, and others to give voice to their work. Art can help children to be creative thinkers and express his or her real life situations. Maybe the children are drawing, painting, or scribbling something going on in his or her life because they are just trying to make sense of their world, and through this process it helps them to communicate freely. I work in a day-care and I feel that the children seem happier when they are given materials in which to explore freely. Sometimes when they are upset I ask them if theywould like to paint or draw a picture to express how they are feeling. This seems to help becauseI think it sends a message that I care about their feelings. I’ve also used music when children arepainting or drawing and ask them to paint to the music. If the music is loud they seem to paint ordrawing aggressively, but when the music is soft they seem to draw or paint more calm pictures using many colors.Another reason that it is important to have a curriculum in art that accommodates diverse learners is for cultural diversity reasons. You may have a class with children who speak differentlanguages, have different religious beliefs, or just many different cultures. There may be children who have same sex parents, foster parents, or just different ways of doing things based on their cultural beliefs and practices. Art can be a way to help children draw or paint things going on in these areas that they cannot through words. We do not have to speak the same language or have the same beliefs to appreciate art.
