punishment when they were children (Fleckman et al., 2018). Since child abuse is passed down from generation to generation in families, another solution is to acknowledge and provide treatment to families. Social services in Belgium has a intervention unit that consists of qualified individuals to evaluate, treat, and offer solutions that are better adapted to these particular families (Haesevoets, 2003). As they provide aid to the families they consider: the analysis of personal, institutional and familial reference systems, how therapeutic intervention may help, 2
the child’s proposition and observation, an active and respectful discussion between the therapists and the parties concerned, the construction of a therapeutic bond with the family, the initiation of a project for change, learning to develop empathy, and a tried and tested ethical approach to treatment (Haesevoets, 2003). Child abuse is affected by social phenomenon, it aligns with the interactionist theoretical perspective, however there are possible solutions. Social deviance and vulnerable populations affect child abuse on the micro and macro levels. Each social phenomenon perpetuates the social problem in many different ways. Child abuse is a social problem that is often overlooked and not taken seriously. There are solutions that can help reduce the number of children being abused each year. The solutions are to protect the children and give parent the adequate support they may need. Even though the solutions exist and has been proven to be effective, there will still be some cases of child abuse in America. In fact, social problems can be alleviated however they will always exist as they have been around for a very long time.
