How many chromatids did each of your daughter cells contain? Each daughter cell had 4 chromatids. 2. Why is it important for each daughter cell to contain information identical to the parent cell? If the daughter cell is not an exact replica of the parent cell, it is likely a mutation has occurred. Mutations can lead to defects in cells. There may be problems with protein synthesis, with cell function, or even cells becoming cancerous . 3. How often do human skin cells divide? Why might that be? Compare this rate to how frequently human neurons divide. What do you notice? Human skin cells divide at different rates depending on the loss of skin cells. Multiple skin cells are lost every second (whether from injury, being rubbed away, etc.), so skin cells divide multiple times every second. The skin cells must divide at a pace fast enough to replace the dead skin cells. For children, the skin cells must also divide quickly enough to accommodate the growth of the human body. Neurons do not divide. Neurons lose connections, but are still able to grow new connections as a person learns new information. Because neurons don’t die off, there is not a need to replicate. 4. Hypothesize what would happen if the sister chromatids did not split equally during anaphase of mitosis.

Lab 5 Mitosis BIO101L If the sister chromatids do not split equally, then cells do not have equal numbers of chromosomes. The cells may either have missing chromosomes or a surplus of chromosomes. This can lead to issues such as Down Syndrome.
