though both stories contain the theme of love, they are completely different and are presented in contrasting ways. For example, the love in the Knight’s Tale is courtly love. Courtly love is when a person would declare their love for another and profess that they have been smitten by another. They would end up pledging themselves to that other person. This would give the woman power over the man because of his devotion to her. Unlike the Knight’s Tale, the love presented in the Miller’s Tale is mainly sexual between Nicholas and Alison and Absalon and Alison. When Nicholas and Alison initially meet, Alison is submissive to Nicholas. When she feels uncomfortable, she threatens to yell, yet she has no control over her situation. Another difference between the love in the tales was that they are fought for by the suitors differently. In the Knight’s Tale, the suitors engage in fierce combat. Palamon and Arcite battled for Emily’s love in a duel using a sword and shield to engage in lengthy ritualized combat with hundreds of knights in a tournament arena. In the Miller’s Tale, the suitors engaged in a slapstick combat for love. Absalon and Nicholas took turns poking fun of one another by branding the opponent’s rear and farting.
