The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was released in August 1967 and Pink Floyd continued to draw huge crowds, but Barrett's deterioration was by then giving them serious concern. The band was forced to cancel their appearance at the National Jazz and Blues Festival and several other shows, informing the music press that Barrett was suffering from nervous exhaustion. Pink Floyd released the single "Apples and Oranges" in November 1967 in the UK. Barrett's condition had worsened, and they responded my adding a new member to their line-up.

In December 1967 the band asked David Gilmour to become the fifth member of Pink Floyd; Gilmour accepted. He studied alongside Barrett at Cambridge Tech in the early 1960s. They planned to keep Barrett in the band only as a song-writer and to have Gilmour perform, but working with Barrett became too difficult. In March of 1968, Barrett agreed to quit the band. With him, their business partners Peter Jenner and Andrew King also left. The remaining members made Pink Floyd one of the most successful rock bands of the 1970s and early 1980s. Waters became the band's primary lyricist and their dominant song- writer, devising the concepts behind their successful albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983). Wright left Pink Floyd in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985, declaring it a "spent force". Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd; Wright rejoined them as a session musician and, later, a band member. The three produced two more albums, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), and toured until 1994. Two of Pink Floyd’s most successful albums were Dark Side of the Moon (1973), which was #1 on the Billboard charts and broke all records by remaining on the Top 200 album charts for more than 740 weeks, and The Wall (1979), which spent over two years on the charts,
