Disadvantages A series of special templates are usually required as the position of the crown changes As the negative superelevation exists, vehicles would tend to move near the crown where superelevation has been provided. Because of the foregoing this method is not usually recommended.

Horizontal Alignment Superelevation Runoff The distance required for accomplishing the transition from a normal crown to a superelevated section is commonly referred to as the transition or superelevation runoff . It is a function of the design speed, rate of superelevation and the pavement or lane width. Recommended minimum lengths of runoff for two lane single carriageway roads are based primarily on the criteria of appearance (aesthetics) and comfort and are generally provided in the relevant standards. Example, for 3.6m width lanes, and superelevation rates between 2-6%; at 100kph design speed, the minimum runoff specified in the Green Book is 60m. Lecture 4 13/04/14 18
