ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEMS TASK 3 5 citizens of Great Britain do not have to fear the medical bills they will incur from a trip to the emergency department or hospitalization. Both emergency department visits and hospitalizations are 100% covered under the NHS (International Commonwealth Fund, 2017, p. 49). Prescription coverage under the NHS presents a huge cost savings for citizens of Great Britain. Under the NHS, there is a fixed, low-cost copay for outpatient prescriptions, medications prescribed by NHS hospitals are free of charge, and there are exemptions for many of the more vulnerable populations. Citizens that need a large amount of prescriptions can purchase prepayment certificates and only pay a set amount for the entire year (International Commonwealth Fund, 2017, p. 50). In contrast, many United States citizens find the high cost of prescriptions unaffordable. Retired people, on a fixed income, report that they are unable to afford all of the medications they are prescribed because the cost of multiple copays is too high. They are often forced to choose between filling their prescriptions and buying groceries. The cost of prescriptions leads to noncompliance and worsening medical conditions.
