Extensions or individualized make-ups
on exams will not be granted to anyone for any reason.
Reaction papers must be turned in at the end of the class meeting when they were
assigned.
They absolutely will not be accepted at any time thereafter. Please do not even ask.
Reaction papers
Students may miss up to 2 (of 7) reaction papers without penalty.
Reaction papers are
designed to be meaningful only to students who are present in class when they are given. They
follow a sequence, make reference to in-class events, or require a comparison group to interpret.
For these reasons, make-ups of reaction papers would be pedagogically nonsensical. However,
students may have valid reasons for missing class (illness, emergency). Therefore, seven reaction
papers will be assigned but only five are counted.
Students who have compelling reasons for missing three reaction papers should inquire
with the instructor about a replacement assignment for the third one. This inquiry must
occur no later than 4/19. Waiting until the deadline to inquire will leave you with very little
time to do the replacement assignment.
Personal explorations and group adventures
No extensions or make ups of individual or group assignments will be granted for any
reason.
Students will have ample time to select, complete, and submit their individual and group
assignments. Moreover, students are required to complete only a fraction of the available individual
and group assignments. If one is missed, simply choose another. Plan ahead to give yourself
flexibility. Don’t wait until the last minute to work on an assignment, and don’t wait for the
assignments with the latest deadlines —you won’t have any further options if you should miss one .
Exams
Students who miss an exam for any reason may make it up by taking the corresponding in-class
make-up exam as scheduled. This is the only option for making up a missed exam.
Makeup exams cannot be made up without explicit authorization from an academic dean.
The options indicated here are the only remedies for missed course requirements. They are very
generous. No other makeup options will be offered for any reason. Please do not ask.
Finally, please note that students can potentially make up for minor deficiencies by earning extra credit
(see pages 7-8 for details).

Allowances for missing course requirements without penalty are intended as
accommodations for hardships and other valid reasons for excusal. They are essentially
pre-authorized excusals for emergencies, illnesses, hospitalizations, death in the family,
religious observances, participation in University-sanctioned events, job interviews,
athletic travel, and any other similar kinds of circumstances that reasonably warrant
