This was called the League of Nations, a commission set up under the chairmanship of Woodrow Wilson. There was a draft created by the members of the commission to negotiate peace called the ‘Treaty of Versailles’ which reflected the difference in attitudes between the

ASSESSMENT ITEM 2: ESSAY 5 major allied powers. The draft was to “protect the world from aggression and to establish the reign of justice on sure foundations throughout the world” (Fromkin, 2007). The main countries involved also included Italy and Japan. Although, they were not so much in the spot light, they had a considerable amount of contribution and more so in the Treaty of Versailles. Italy, represented by Orlando did make certain claims including a Treaty of London which constituted a legitimate basis for the drawing of Italy’s eastern frontier; this was to give Italy a defense against Austria- Hungary, which no longer existed. This was not needed and was turned down. The president rejected Italy’s case. The Americans were becoming more firm in resisting the Italian claims and felt that the Italians threat of revolution if their threat was not accepted should not affect the American delegation. The French point of view was that the league would aim at maintaining peace against disputes. This was important to the French, because they were fearful of Germany having a larger population and its skilled military tactics; that Germany would develop fresh designs of conquest. In addition, the French wanted to “have a military force of sufficient strength at its disposal to overcome any transgressors forces”. This was linked to Germany considering that Germany declared war on France and offset the start of the war by their attack also declaring war on Russia. The French were struck the hardest and had given more of themselves in defense against Germany and her allies. However, they felt that Germany was responsible for their losses and in the end Germany was to compensate for all the loss and damage caused (McMeekin, 2013). The British, French and Italians worked together in the beginning to come to terms with the Americans for fear that the Americans would neglect to sign the treaty to give the Italians the Adriatic Islands. Through Lloyd George and Clemenceau but Woodrow did not agree to it. This

Italy was out of the picture and Japan’s position was taking shape. Japan, an Asian power was honored to be considered in the Treaty of Versailles and much more accepted by the western powers as an equal (Fossati, 1990). This was one of the purposes of their presence in Paris by having a status of recognition as a great World power equal to any other powers. Japan was not taken into the supreme council of four and although it sought a place as one of the principle allies, France was against it. Japan wanted recognition on a right to
