the hemisphere with gender parity as she named ten males and ten females to her cabinet (Ross, 2006, p. 724). Manners and Customs Chile has a few mannerisms and customs that differ from other countries. Handshakes between men are expected and it is considered rude to not shake everyone’s hand in the gathering or meeting. If the men know each other well a hand may be placed on the shoulder or back while conversing. Personal body space is much closer in Chile than that of the United States and it often leads to uncomfortable situations, however one should try to endure the lack of personal space in order to avoid offending the other party (Etiquette, 2009, p. 1). Women are not expected to shake hands with men but sometimes will in business settings. Women will kiss each other on the right cheek lightly when greeting at the beginning of the meeting. Women should not kiss men on the cheek unless it is a close family member or significant other (2009, p. 1). Manners, especially table manners, are very important in the Chilean culture. Failure to use proper table manners is considered socially unacceptable, especially among the elite and wealthy. The Chilean culture is however accepting of both the European and the Western etiquette rules. It is customary to wait for everyone to have their food before eating and to try some of everything on the plate (2009, p. 2). GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 10 celebrates Christmas, Good Friday and Easter as well as some Catholic holidays like Pablo Pedro, All Saints Day, Corpus Christi and the Immaculate Conception. On the Immaculate Conception, many citizens of Santiago will take a 50 mile journey often times crawling to show thanks and gratitude to the Virgin Mary (Carpenter, Pomade, Crow, Bean, Moncada, & Berg, 2008, p. 18). The major national holidays in Chile include its Independence Day on September 18 th , Dia de las Glorias Navales (Navy Day) on May 21 st , and Army Day on September 19 th . The combination of the Independence Day and Army Day is known in Chile as Fiestas Patrias during which “Chileans are legally obligated to fly the national flag” (2008, p. 18). Many parades and celebrations will be held on these two days, including a military parade in Santiago. Social Structures and Organizations The Republic of Chile social structures are based more on the traditional institutions such as family, religion, economics, politics and increasingly education than the nontraditional social structures. Much of the social structure derives from the social classes. There is the upper class (also called the social elite), the middle class and the lower class. The middle class has become much more defined in the last fifty years. In Chile it is possible to move from one social class to another (Buchot, 2019, p. 3).
