This preview shows page 2 out of 2 pages.

The parasympathetic nervous system works in opposition to the SNS . It is related to activities that help the body store or conserve energy. It is also known as the rest-and- digest response. When it is stimulated it cause s increased motility and secretions in the GI tract to allow for the digestion of nutrients. It decreases the heart rate to conserve energy and to allow the heart to rest , constricts the bronchi and pupils, and relaxes the sphincters to allow evacuation of waste product. These activities are aimed at increasing digestion to absorb more nutrients, build essential proteins, and conserve energy. d. What are a muscarinic receptor and a nicotinic receptor? e. Muscarinic and nicotinic receptors are classes of cholinergic receptors . Muscarinic receptors are receptors that can be stimulated by muscarine . They are formed in visceral effector organs like the GI tract, bladder, heart, also in sweat glands and some smooth muscle. When muscarinic receptors are stimulated, it causes pupil constriction, increased GI motility and secretions , increased urinary bladder contraction, and slowing of the heart rate. Nicotinic receptors found in the central nervous syst em, the adrenal medulla, the autonomic ganglia, and the neuromuscular junction. When nicotinic receptors are stimulated, it causes skeletal muscle contractions, signs and symptoms of a stress reaction, and the release of nor epinephrine and epinephrine.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
