The prospect of the present Russian militaryoffensive in Ukraine raising the spectre of a fullblown nuclear war is being widely feared withPresident Vladimir Putin placing Russian nuclearforces on full alert following the stepped up militaryaid being poured into Ukraine by the West. State-ments by NATO powers are also believed to havehastened the hand of the Russian President to con-sider drastic alternatives. Coupled with this is thestout resilience shown by Ukraine’s military in so farstaving off the enemy whereas in the minds of most, with its superior military might, Russia capturingUkraine was expected to be a cake walk ending withthe termination of the Ukrainian Government. On the contrary, Ukraine claims that it has killed 4,600Russian troops and wants the ICRC to hand overtheir bodies across the border. All this would haverankled President Putin in addition to other drasticactions taken by the West to strangle the Russianeconomy. “Western countries are not only takingunfriendly actions against our country in the eco-nomic sphere but top officials from leading NATOmembers are making aggressive statements,” Putinsaid in televised comments, amidst the prospects oftalks aimed at ending the imbroglio. It certainly looks like an imbroglio, with Russian Forcesbeing stretched in its bid to capture Kiev in the faceof fierce resistance from the Ukrainian military, aug-mented by volunteers from among the civilian popu-lation who are being urged by President VolodymyrZelensky to confront the enemy with Molotov cock-tails. The appeal by Zelensky to men from amongUkraine’s neighbours to join in the fighting to protectthe sovereignty of his nation and in the name of truthand justice, too, perhaps may have provoked Presi-dent Putin into taking drastic measures. It certainly has not been smooth sailing for the Rus-sian Forces as the Ukrainian Army continued to holdout against Putin’s advancing juggernaut into theCapital City for the fifth consecutive day raising theprospect among certain analysts about a possiblestalemate which Russia could not afford without los-ing face, which would not only cause a huge dent tothe reputation of its military might but also pose achallenge to its ‘superpower’ statusvis-a-visthe US.In any event, the Russians cannot afford to let up onits military offensive at this stage of the fighting andwould continue its air and ground offensives. It hadalready all but captured Kharkiv -Ukraine’s secondlargest city- and will certainly continue the onslaughtto have the upper hand in bargaining in the negotia-tions now underway near the Belarus border.
