People of different religions hold different understandings of human sexuality. These religious views often have a profound impact. Science and Sexuality Scientific study of sex began in the 19th century. Major breakthroughs in the scientific understanding of sex came with the massive surveys in the United States by Alfred Kinsey and investigations by Masters and Johnson. The scientific study of sexuality has not emerged as a separate academic discipline. It is a joint effort by sociologists, biologists, psychologists, anthropologists, & physicians. Compulsory heterosexuality is the assumption that individuals should desire only members of the opposite sex. Due to compulsory sexuality, strong social sanctions are placed on homosexuals and transgendered people such as: graffiti, speeches and statements, wearing symbols and slogans that vilify, gestures, jokes, un-equal access, and ultimately violence. Examples of Heterosexual Privilege You can go wherever you want and know that you will not be harassed, beaten, or even killed because of your sexuality Student rights laws or policies do not include sexual orientation as a protected category You can express affection (kissing, hugging, and holding hands) in most social situations and not expect hostile or violent reactions from others You can discuss your relationships and publicly acknowledge your partner (such as by having a picture of your lover on your desk) without fearing that people will automatically disapprove or think that you are being “blatant” Sexual Pluralism Sexual pluralism is the view that: The expression of sexuality is in a variety of ways, and not always according to traditionally feminine and masculine gender scripts Socially Defined Sex Femininity and masculinity mean different things in different cultures and change overtime. All men and all women do not constitute a homogenous group. Since gender is socially learned, sexuality is also social defined. People dissatisfied with their body image are less likely to desire and engage in sexual activity. Excessive concern with body image can result in anorexia nervosa (refusal to eat enough to remain healthy) and bulimia (regular, self-induced vomiting). More facts about our sex drive James Watson, the Nobel prize-winning geneticist found that extra fat tissue boost endorphins & Leptin chemicals in our bodies, which are linked to a stronger sex drive. Think about it this way….. If a woman loses too much body fat, not only does her sex drive decrease, but she runs the risk of losing her period and reproductive cycle! In fact her libido DECREASES!
