If nobody else is there to take the fake, then for good or bad a part of your own self will follow it” (Brooks 252) Bix runs away from home because he feels he has hurt his mother too much Jerome realizes how Bix’s philosophy of never lying has hurt him Jerome receives a letter from Bix who has ran away to DC Jerome learns that when you lie there is always someone who will believe you If nobody else is there to believe you, then you yourself will believe the lie Jerome begins to learn the impact of lying

A week before school started my momma got a letter superintendent of the schools. What it said was, Chestnut Street Junior High School was about to get itself integrated by one colored child, name of Jerome Foxworthy” (Brooks 45) Jerome is moving to an all-white school He begins to miss his old friends He worries that he will get bullied because he is the only black person in the school Once Jerome enrolls into Chestnut, his perception on white people begins to change. He initially thought white people were all alike but he was wrong. (Brooks 52) He sees the rich kids, poor kids, jocks, smart kids, attractive people, unattractive people, funny people, etc. all tin one school.
