the entire process easier for the family because they knew that her son/brother/fiancé was respected and treated like a person regardless of whether he heard anything or not. They medical staff looked past the patient’s illness while maintaining his dignity, which I believe helped to build therapeutic relationships. 5. Read and react to the following two quotes from Peter Singer, the controversial Australian philosopher.“The notion that human life is sacred just because it is human life is medieval.” and“Almost everybody accepts that some people can be killed. 'The concept of 'brain death' - the belief that people on respirators can legitimately be killed - shows that.”I agree with this quote that human life should be valued of having worth and significance. However, I also agree with the fact that people look at human life as being superior than other lives such as animal life, which is old-fashioned. As a result, I agree to disagree with this belief because human life is just as sacred as animal lives. They must be valued at the same level; even though as a human we may have our biases towards other people. I agree with the second statement to some extent. Although an individual’s heart is still beating, and have gas exchange, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are alive. If a person is brain dead, that means they are not virtually present anymore and that human life has ended. However, I disagree with the term “killed” because they should still be approached with personhood. The soul of that individual may still be felt and be present for many. Therefore, I don’t think it is ethical to state that they are being killed, but ratherapproaching end-of-life due to the diminishing natural function of the body.
