display. Now if you were to look really closely at the screen of any display device, you'll notice that it's actually made up of tiny dots of red, green and blue wide. Now each of these colors is called a sub-pixel. These three sub-pixels, red, green and blue then make up one pixel. The second thing that you need to remember is the fact that the resolution value only refers to a single line of horizontal and vertical pixels. If you need to calculate the total number of pixels on a display device, you actually need to multiply those two numbers together. So a display device with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 actually has over two million individual pixels. Now in general, the more pixels that are used to create the image, the higher the quality that image will be. That's why higher resolution displays can achieve much better picture quality then lower resolution displays. Now one last thing to know about display resolution is the fact that modern flat screen display devices have what's called the native resolution. This is very important. Now the native resolution identifies the specific resolution that a particular monitor make and model can achieve. This is because the value represents the physical number of horizontal and vertical pixels on the display, the native resolution also identifies the resolution that will look best on the display and this is a little bit of an issue because in the old days when we were dealing with CRT monitors there was no such thingas a native resolution. You could set the monitor to a variety of different resolutions and it usually looked pretty good. It's not the case with a modern flat screen LCD or LED monitor. There is one display resolution that it should be set to consult the documentation, find out what the native resolution is and use only that resolution. Aspect Ratio 3:08-4:54 Now the next specification we need to talk about is the aspect ratio, which is directly related to the display resolution value. Now the aspect ratio is the proportion between the width and the height of a displays resolution and it's represented by two numbers separated by a colon. Essentially the aspect ratio defines how wide a display should be in relation to it's height. And there are three common aspect ratios that you need to be aware of, 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10. Now older displays, older CRT displays used an aspect ratio of 4:3 but most modern displays use either a16:9 or a 16:10 ratio. And we sometimes refer to these as widescreen aspect ratios. Now when we're talking about aspect ratios there's a couple of important things that you need to remember. First of all, HDTV broadcasts and many modern digital high definition video cameras will use the 16:9 aspect ratio. Older TV broadcasts and older video cameras use the old 4:3 aspect ratio but the 16:10 aspect ratio is almost exclusively used by computer monitors.
