community. In light of this, the study aims to assess social constructionism in the natural phenomena surrounding the discourses in LGBT through the upbringing of the participants characterized in the study. It evaluate parental upbringing as a social phenomenon in which naturally the upbringing of the child occurs within society as a biological aspect of shaping the child’s mentality. With all this, the social cognitive theory by Albert Bandura provides further explanation on how they are affected by their upbringing. The social cognitive theory would prove useful in defining parental upbringing as part of the environment of the adolescents where they eventually learn, adapt, and apply what they are exposed to and what they learn from their own environment. While social constructionism defines that the socially constructed views in a particular society propagate throughout culture. The social cognitive theory then defines how the very participants themselves react to these worldviews are they are slowly shown, taught and made to realize these particular worldview in the primary context of their environment which is their own familial unit wherein they significantly develop their own personalities, attitudes, ideas, and perceptions of the world in their formative years given the examples of their own parents and other authoritative figures of their family.

Understanding LGBT culture: The influence of the parental upbringing of Filipino heterosexual middle- class adolescents on shaping their perception on the LGBT community 23 As the members of the focused group discussion will be talking about terms which may be socially sensitive given the contemporary context, such as sexuality and people’s views on acceptance, it is of utmost importance that all other individuals within close proximity are ones they would consider to be at the very least a peer, in order to elicit subjective statements, their honest and untouched opinions, on such topics. Being amongst people of similar age will enable a change in context in terms of comfort for the students, as this controlled setting will give off an atmosphere in which they may express their honest responses on the LGBT-related questions without any fear, or consciousness of the judgements of parents, onlookers, or any other group of individuals with whom they are not completely comfortable with on a social aspect, as they would feel like they would not understand their situation and context. Instead, they would be anxious of the assumptions that could come out of this sort of misunderstanding, which would result to the possible giving off of the wrong idea about the individual and his/her opinions at hand. With the focused group discussion set up at the ideal standards and conditions, these adolescents will then get the chance to really exhaust their thoughts and contribute valuable information into this research study, and possibly for future research which also pertain to the LGBT community and other related fields of contemporary knowledge.
