Because of this multistage development, it can be seen that development of metastasis characters actually occurs early in cancer development rather than later, which was the dominating viewpoint. This can bee seen through the co-option of host vasculature by the cancer cells, which can help it grow in many new places. The paper also wants to consider this new way of thinking about cancer cells and use it in the development of drugs, in the use of drug targets. The paper talks about the aptations that we talk about in class. Aptations are features that have uses for an organism in their current environment. Aptations come in two types, adaptations and exaptations. This paper talks about co-options, which is a type of exaptation. Specifically, this is a preadaptation, a trait that now has a different use than the original plan. The genes in the cells which had a different purpose are now being used to give cancerous cells the specific traits that make them cancerous. Another example of co-option in evolution is in the skulls of vertebrates. They have sutures inbetween the bones which allow for growth. But, the sutures are now used for a different purpose. These sutures allow the skull to compress as it passes through the birth canal, making giving birth easier.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
