Counselling seems to have been an important tool in equipping these women with the skill to assert their rights and to look at themselves from a more empowering perspective. This would enable them to become active agents of change in their own lives and the lives of others. Dance, Drama and Singing Interviewees pointed out how participating in groups involving drama, dance and singing was particularly useful and a source of strength and a way of avoiding recurrent traumatic 8

thoughts. Interviewees explained how participating in these activities assisted in relating to others in the community. I love dancing… playing and making jokes with all categories of people. Be it children or adults. Participating in these activities makes me forget my problems and the bad things that happened in the past. (Interviewee, 8) The dance and drama group … initially constituted of formerly abducted persons but later even those who did not stay in the bush joined ... Together with the group members, we act and inform people about our situation, the way we feel and how we would want people to treat us. (Interviewee, 1) This is an example of how a group which initially consisted of returnees came to comprise of women from the wider community. This indicates healthy levels of reintegration and the acknowledgement that women in the community share similar challenges and that they can pool resources and assist one other. Drama, dance and singing as modes of communication are closely related to the theme of community dialogue. This involves all members of the community who through dialogue share and exchange ideas with one another hence bringing positive change to the whole community. Through dialogue, one gets to know how others feel about a given situation and that those who were in the bush are also human beings like them. We did not join the rebels willingly but rather were forced. So there need to understand us (Interviewee, 3). Another interviewee pointed out that radio talk shows had been helpful in enhancing community reintegration and empathetic understanding in order to combat prejudice, stigma and stereotyping in the wider community. Life used to be very hard due to prejudice stigma but with the continued radio talk shows and involvement of community members about the dangers of prejudice, stigmatization, and stereotype among others, made most people realize their mistakes and made them change their actions (Interviewee, 1). Conclusion The micro and macro factors which lead to the “child-soldier doctrine” in Africa exacerbate the reintegration of these young women into their communities and present severe challenges for non-governmental organisations which are trying to rehabilitate them. Several factors influenced the participants’ perceptions of reintegration, such as levels of stigmatisation, stereotyping and prejudice, participation and sense of belonging. Most of them experienced hardships whilst some had more successful stories to tell. Their stories were testimonies of considerable difficulties along with a remarkable strength to survive. These women faced a harsh reality but nonetheless many displayed a considerable level of resilience and agency.
