Culturally competent Nursing Caregrowing diversity has significant implications for the health care system.Adapting to different cultural beliefs and practices requires flexibility and acceptance of others’ viewpoints. Nurses must listen toclients and learn about their beliefs about health and wellness. To provide culturally appropriate care to diverse populations, nursesneed to know, understand, and respect culturally influenced health behaviors.Nurses must research and understand the cultural characteristics, values, and beliefs of the various people to whom they deliver careso that false assumptions and stereotyping do not leadto insensitive care. Time orientation, personal space,family orientation (patriarchal, matriarchal, oregalitarian), and language are important culturalconcepts. Although the location might be different incommunity-based care, these principles apply to bothinpatient and outpatient settings. Utilizingculturalhumilityrequires nurses to step outside of themselvesto be open to other people’s identities, in a way thatacknowledges their authority over their ownexperiences.Nurses should possess an understanding of theperspectives, traditions, values, practices, and familysystems of culturally diverse individuals, families,communities, and populations for whom they providecare, as well as knowledge of the complex variablesthat affect the achievement of health and well-being(U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesOffice of Minority Health [USDHHSOMH], 2019).Cultural competenceis a dynamic process duringwhich nurses obtain and then apply culturalinformation.Cultural humility goes much deeper than cultural competence because the nurse reverses roles and learns from the clientabout their diverse culture.Nurses must look at clients through their own eyes and the eyes of clients and family members.Nurses must develop nonjudgmental acceptance of cultural differences in clients, using diversity as a strength thatempowers them to achieve mutually acceptable health care goals. Nurses must integrate their client’s cultural beliefs andpractices into health prescriptions to eliminate or mitigate health disparities and provide client satisfaction.A new term has been coined–cultural competemility–which blends the terms cultural competence and cultural humility. It is definedas the synergistic process between cultural humility and cultural competence in which humility permeates each of the five componentsof cultural competence (Campinha-Bacote, 2019). This cultural awareness allows nurses to see the entire picture and improves thequality of care and health outcomesBarriers to cultural compatibilityIllness is culturally shaped in the sense that how we perceive, experience, and cope with disease is based upon ourexplanations of sickness.
