Patient Case – Questions What gynecologic disorder do you think this patient has and what supports this? Given this patient’s presenting signs and symptoms, she is likely to have PCOS. Supporting signs and symptoms include oligomenorrhea; signs of increased testosterone concentrations (facial and chest acne, hirsutism of the face and abdomen); obesity. What other information would be of assistance in further evaluating this patient? Documentation of whether or not this patient is ovulating (is she experiencing anovlulatory bleeding?). Evaluation for metabolic syndrome: fasting cholesterol panel; fasting blood glucose; blood pressure. Why is it important to identify the presence of PCOS? Planning for future fertility/pregnancy Creating a plan to reduce the patient’s risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes in identifying the presence of the metabolic syndrome (if it exists).
