She could have substituted the word with public

This preview shows page 3 - 5 out of 6 pages.

She could have substituted the word with Public education instead of “public babysitting” so that it doesn’t seem that she just send him off so she doesn’t have to worry about him. Her word choice indicates that she doesn’t like to take care of her son and that she can have about 6 hours a day where she doesn’t have to worry about him and can feel safe and enjoy her day. 11) What do paragraphs 12-14 show about Michael? What appeal is created? Why? Be specific. Don’t just name the appeal. Say how appeal is created. It shows that Michael moods can change at anytime and that he can be nice and amazing and can change very quickly to be very mean and nasty. For example, “Look mom, I’m really sorry.” This is an example of how his mood can change and that he can say something but won’t really mean it. 12) In paragraph 19, what does the author’s use of the word “frantically” suggest? What tone is created by the use of that word? By using frantically, it suggests that she was really worried and probably her son was doing something very badly in the car and wanted to get some help right away. It creates almost a distressed tone because by the mom being frantic, probably means she was very panicked. 13) What appeal is created through the use of the last sentence in paragraph 20? Why? How is the appeal created? How does the reader view the mother after that sentence? What kind of future awaits her?

It creates such dark feeling and scared feeling because she is worried that when she is older she will not be able to protect herself from her son because she will be to weak to and he will be way stronger. I as a reader view the last sentence as if she knows her future that something is going to happen to her and she can’t stop it. Her future is that her son might do something bad to her and probably won’t be able to defend herself. 14) In paragraph 21, why does the author decide to include the questions she has to fill out? Why not just say I had to fill out paperwork or answer questions? Consider what is going on in the rest of the paragraph. To show the context and steps that she needed to take to make sure she update the people on her son's well being. By not saying she just filled out paperwork or answer questions it creates a sense that she is overwhelmed with the questions that she has to fill out. 15) Paragraph 22—consider the bigger message in this paragraph. What does this say about her as a mother? What does this say about our society if a mother like her with a son like this cannot get health insurance and “it doesn’t cover this type of thing”? It shows that in society, that people don’t see mental illness as something you need insurance for and that it is not as important. By saying it doesn’t cover mental illness it creates a sense that our society is blinded to the fact that mental illness is something serious and dangerous and is an actual thing.
