Firstly you must use some filter paper and attach it to a metal rod on a clamp. Draw a pencil line halfway up and put the food dye near the bottom of the paper. Dip the bottom of the paper into water and allow it to move up the paper for approx. 5 mins and the remove the paper from the water. If the food dye is pure then it will only produce one spot on the chromatogram. . 6. Describe the process of distillation using an ethanol and water mixture as an example. Firstly you must put the water and ethanol solution in a flask with a rubber bung. This will be attached to a plastic syringe which leads to a beaker. The solution is heated with a Bunsen burner. The ethanol evaporates first, cools, then condenses. The water that is left then evaporates, cools, then condenses. 7. Explain the difference between simple distillation and fractional distillation. Fractional distillation is similar to simple distillation except that a fractionating column is placed between the boiling flask and the condenser. The fractioning column is usually filled with glass or plastic beads.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
