Age for screening due to average risk: beginning at age 40 o If high risk: may start earlier Women with a known BRCA gene mutation/genetic disorder such as Li- Fraumeni or Cowden syndrome Women with a history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or high risk lesion on breast biopsy should begin yearly screening at the time of diagnosis despite age Women who received chest (mantle) radiation between ages 10-30; screening starts 8 years after radiation treatment is completed but not before age 25 o Should not be routinely performed in women under age 30/ pregnant women Mammogram: primary cornerstone of screening o Has been studied extensively o The only breast cancer screening modality Proved to significantly reduce mortality rates o If cancer is detected under 1cm in size, the five-year survival is essentially the same as the population at large o 2 categories of mammography: Screening: Routine, preventive exam in asymptomatic women 4 standards views (bilateral CC and MLO) Diagnostic : Evaluation of a specific symptom
