HITECH provides a means of development, adaptation, and implementation of policies and standard to protect the patient’s information [ CITATION McG15 \l 1033 ]. The HITECH act also developed the “Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology” (ONC) [ CITATION McG15 \l 1033 ]. The ONC is the agency responsible to oversee and support the exchange of sensitive patient information [ CITATION McG15 \l 1033 ]. To enhance patient’s privacy, there has been some implementations to EHRs to promote confidentiality. Although there are many laws and regulation to promote patient’s privacy, there is plenty of opportunity for a breach of patient confidentiality to occur [ CITATION She171 \l 1033 ]. Due to the potential of patient privacy to be breached other safety measures have been implemented. To ensure privacy soft barriers have been established. Some of the soft barriers include having each user with a personal login and password [ CITATION She171 \l 1033 ]. Other safety features within the EHR system is “break the glass” which makes the individual attest to their right on why they require access to the chart [ CITATION She171 \l 1033 ]. For others, such as physicians, they may have hard barriers before entering a specific part of the patient’s chart which entails the answering of a sequence of questions on why that part of the chart needs to be accessed [ CITATION She171 \l 1033 ].
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE PROJECT 4 Advantages and Disadvantages of Implementing EMR Systems in Nursing Education With any new implementation of software, there are positive as well as negative aspects to take into consideration. There are several advantages to implementing the EHR system in nursing education. One of the basic ways to comprehend the advantages of the EHR system is that computers functions in an input and output manner [ CITATION McG15 \l 1033 ]. To be able to get the full benefits of the EHR system, proper input of information needs to be imported. A disadvantage of inputting in the information is that although it is a computer system saving the information, the information is only as good as the person who is importing the information. Thus, there is still a chance of human error within the information. Another advantage of incorporating EHR within the nursing education is by allowing a realistic approach for individuals to learn [ CITATION McG15 \l 1033 ]. Having the student exposed to EHR can allow the student to have a better understanding of nursing informatics [ CITATION McG15 \l 1033 ]. A disadvantage of incorporating EHR to nursing education is adding additional material to the curriculum. Describe Learning Opportunities to Support Decision Making and Support The nursing role in decision making and continued education in EHR is vital and necessary, especially because life expectancy has increased. As individuals live longer, their medical conditions can compound and becomes chronic problems. Interestingly, the level of patient readmission with in hospitals in the United States contributes to both high cost of care as well as it impacts the quality of care patients receive [ CITATION Jam17 \l 1033 ].
