meaningful understand or at least observation of the world around them- studied the beauty of the earth- studied the sensations of the earth- down to the basics of humanity - “he neither understood nor desired” because nature is “compell[ing]” man to take in its wonder, it is an act of force- humans did/do not want to wonder about nature, nor do they understand the revelations that they make during their “aesthetic contemplation” they can not control nature in this moment, therefore the power of the natural world takes control of their ability to think - “face to face” comparing nature to a human almost Fitzgerald saying that humans and nature are the two opposing acts of life? Or drawing attention to the absurdity of the comparison- no way that humans could come face to face with nature- nature is overall more powerful Therefore showing the stupidity of the human attempt to conquer nature - “last time in history” the growing industrialization, the changing times, the rise of human science, basically the modern world has progressed to such an extent that humans no longer feel the need to wonder at the greatness and power of nature because of the power, wealth, ‘understanding’ that we have now
