sinks; lack of soap and disposable paper towels; lack of knowledge, experience and education on hand hygiene guidelines or protocols; lack of active participation in hand hygiene promotion at individual or institutional level; lack of institutional priority for hand hygiene and lack of administrative sanctions for non-compliers. According to Widmer (2000); Pittet et al (2000); Larson et al (2001) and Picheansathian (2004), adoption of alcohol-based hand rub is considered the gold standard for the performance of hand hygiene in clinical situations based on evidence of better microbiological efficacy, amount of time required to achieve the desired effect, point of patient-care accessibility and a better skin tolerance profile. Allegranzi et al (2010) reported that considerable progress was being made in healthcare facilities worldwide in efforts to reduce healthcare-associated infections by adhering to hand hygiene recommendations. Research Proposal Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi and cited forgetfulness, unavailability of hand sanitizers and negligence as the frequent reasons for failure to disinfect hands by the clinicians and medical students. Ndegwa (2014) assessed hand hygiene practices in three Kenyan hospitals and reported a baseline adherence rate of 28%, with ICUs having the highest compliance rates while Surgical and Pediatric units had the lowest rates. Katama (2011) reported a baseline hand hygiene adherence rate of 30.8% in a cross-sectional descriptive and observational survey among clinical workers at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi. Research Methodology Research design A simple descriptive survey design was used. The researcher employed a self-test questionnaire with closed-ended items to collect primary data from the study participants. Target population The total accessible population considered for the study was 533 health workers distributed within different work units at Samburu Health center, Kwale County . Table 3.1 shows the distribution of health workers in different work units within the facility. The researcher used the following formula for determining study sample sizes in cross-sectional surveys in order to calculate the sample size for the study (Charan & Biswas, 2013) Where: n is the sample size (if the target population is more than 10, 000, as in this study) Z is the standard normal deviate or variate (at 5% type 1 error and p<0.05, Z is 1.96) P is the expected proportion of characteristic being measured in the target population based on previous studies (For this study, it is estimated at 10% or 0.10) 13

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
