Post Lab Questions: Post Lab Questions 1. o -Hydroxyacetophenone and p -Hydroxyacetophenone have a sizable difference in melting points because of the formation of the compounds. p -Hydroxyacetophenone forms strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds with other molecules, thus breaking those bonds requires a lot of energy, resulting in a high melting point. o -Hydroxyacetophenone, on the other hand, can only form intramolecular hydrogen bonds, thus it is easier to break those bonds resulting in a low melting point. 2. a. The two unknown halogenated alkenes do not separate in ethyl acetate solvent because the solvent is too polar. A less polar solvent can be used to see the two distinct spots b. The mixture is not spotting separately because the solvent is not polar enough.
