legislation allowed large numbers of immigrants once again into the country. Although discrimination is legally prohibited, many immigrants continue to face this challenge whether they are illegally or legally living in the United States. Immigration itself is also a controversial issue. Latino immigrants also were statistically less educated than compared to other immigrants, such as Asain immigrants. Because they are poorer and less educated, they are more vulnerable to civil rights violations and a lack of legal protection. Immigration was seen as a civil rights issue, basically. There is also the issue of the language barrier as proposals to make English the official language of the United States would disenfranchise the Latin American community as the majority of this population speak Spanish.
