look back, with three Academy Awards for Best Cinematographer under his belt and various award nominations to date. Conrad Hall credits his cinematic success to his determination on keeping things ‘real’. In an interview about his films Mr. Hall says “…if a viewer can’t handle a film that’s realistic, how do they handle reality?...[I hope] one might feel better about one’s own situation or maybe even relate and get something positive out of the film after watching it.” 10 If realism was Conrad Hall’s goal then he has wonderfully succeeded at it. In a review of American Beauty film critic David Denby praises Mr. Hall’s work stating “…when Mendes wound up working with the great American cinematographer Conrad L. Hall, a miracle was wrought. …A dazzling technician… and from the opening shots we are stunned…” 112 Professionally as well as stylistically Sam Mendes and Conrad L. Hall complemented each other perfectly. With Mr. Hall’s acquired wisdom of the film making industry and Mr. Mendes’s eagerness and fresh perspective for the film, they were a match made in cinematic heaven. Mr. Mendes’ theatrical training was overlapped with an unusual level of confidence for a first-time movie director. That, paired with Conrad Hall’s incredibly genius imagery is what makes American Beauty the film that it is, and shall remain. 2 11 David Denby, “American Beauty: Critical Reviews.” The New Yorker Oct. 1999, retrieved via dreamworks.com

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
