thoughts and beliefs cause them to react and behave in particular ways. The ABC model format breaks this down for the client: A. Something happens; B. You have a belief about the situation; and last C. You have an emotional reaction to the belief. This model does not just around. A does not cause C, but rather B causes C. This further shows that the situation does not cause the emotional reaction. This would show Ana that her beliefs have an effect on how she is responding to her current situation. The counselor would help her understand how her thoughts and beliefs have caused the way she reacts to current situations. She feels lonely because her husband is deployed. She feels hopeless because she lost her job. These emotions have caused her to react in certain ways that have caused her anxiety and depression. To use her situation in the ABC model would look something like this:A.Ana has not been in contact with her family while she has been living in the States with her husband. She sees how her siblings have become successful by completing college, while she was unable to because of her pregnancy with her son. She feels like a failure when it comes to her family life. B.She believes that her lack of family support is caused from her not finishing college and in turn she feels inferior.C.This causes Ana to be depressed and hopeless, and this causes her anxiety. This model shows that her situation did not cause her anxiety and depression, but yet the way shefeels and perceives her situation. If Ana had a different belief and saw a different side of B, then she would have a different outcome for C. Instead of feeling that she lost contact with her family because she didn’t finish college and she believes she is inferior for it, she could look at it in a different way. Her counselor could help her see that maybe she lost contact because they are in different countries and they may be on very different work and time schedules, and not because she didn’t finish college because of her pregnancy. This could in turn change her emotional
