Settles states, “Divorce rates vary by the adult child’s status with rates of 24.5% when both were only children, 8.4% when one was an only child and 11.7% for those from families with more than one child. 10 ” Marriages are longer lasting among adults who were raised with siblings, as they learned to compromise and cooperate with others. L. Cameron of the Science Magazine of Scholarly Studies explains why only child children tend to lean toward divorce, “Only children are often viewed as disadvantaged as a result of ‘sibling deprivation,’ which may lead to their being self-centered, less cooperative, and less likely to get along with peers. 11 ” However, there have been some benefits academically since the OCP took full effect. Settles concludes, from studies in 96 and 98, that only children were more advanced in social abilities than children with siblings. Only children were more likely to have friends, more easy-going, and less likely to be alone. In contrast, studies mentioned in L. Cameron's article in 2013 concluded that children affected by the OCP grew up to be significantly less trusting, less trustworthy, more risk-averse, 10 Settles, H. Barbara “ The One-Child Policy and Its Impact on Chinese Families. ” University of Delaware Publishing. Handbook of Families in Chinese Societies. January 4 th 2002. 11 Cameron, L. and Erkal, N. and Gangadharan, Lata ad Meng, Zing. “ Little Emperors: Behavioral Impacts of China’s One-Child Policy .” Australian Research Council. 1 5 less competitive, more pessimistic, less altruistic, and less conscientious. 12 The lower divorce rate among larger families may relate to the finding in Zheng Mu‘s and Yu Xie’s study, ”Fertility Effects on Parents in China”. They found that with more children, fathers reported greater subjective well-being and mothers reported both better overall subjective well-being and better social abilities. The OCP has had a devastating impact on the mental health of women forced to have abortions or be sterilized. As evidenced in the Congressional Hearing Statement from Dr. Steven Mosher, President of Population Research, “In every other country of the world, more men than women commit suicide. ...It is the middle aged and elderly, who predominantly end their lives. In China, it is precisely the opposite. It is young women, because that is the precise demographic that is being targeted for forced abortion and forced sterilization. And the forced sterilization adds another layer of guilt and anger to the whole process, because it prevents a woman from having a make-up child, a child to make up for the child that she lost. 13 ” When women are forced to abandon babies, have forced c-sections then endure the murder of their newborn babies, or endure forced sterilizations, they must deal with the emotional trauma that follows these human rights violations.
